Isolation in Community  -  - - - Canadian Ice Fishing Huts

In the winter of 2022, as a creative, emotional and physical outlet, I began taking my beagle for walks on my local frozen lake - Lake Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.

Growing up near the lake, I have long been fascinated with the way the colourful ice huts dot the all-white winter landscape.  In the past, I have photographed them from a distance, with the specks of colour contrasting against the all white lake and winter skies.

With the pandemic, these ice huts brought a new context to the idea of isolation.  A ubiquitous word we heard throughout the pandemic.  These ice huts are a chosen form of isolation and escape from a busy world. What was interesting to me, is that these ice huts were often grouped in communities. A symbolism of how much community matters. Even on a barren, frozen landscape, community gathers.

All photographs were taken on a DSLR and were not 'photoshopped'.  The huts are as I found them.  Another enjoyment of mine - seeing how much winter skies differ from the rest of the year.

Thank you for enjoying this ice hut adventure with me!
