Artist Statement

In my photographic work, I explore the intersection of nature, isolation, and human presence through the lens of Canada’s iconic ice huts. In 2021 I began to photograph the ice huts on my local lake as a creative and physical outlet.  At the time, I viewed the huts in light of isolation and what it looked like to choose to isolate oneself, especially in light of recent forced pandemic isolation. These small structures, often found dotting my local frozen lakes during the winter months, hold an intriguing space between solitude and community, tradition and modernity. I love how the huts often form into villages, yet there are always outliers dotting the lake, choosing their own solitude.

Aesthetically, I became enamored with the visual contrast of pops of colour contrasting against the sharp clean white palette of snow.  In 2023, I extended the dreamscape by creating my own whimsical huts to inhabit the lake.

Some of my photographs exude whimsy, and others show a type of resilience, with humans carving a space for themselves in the harsh landscape.  The human experience encapsulates both whimsy and resilience and it is this collective and personal narrative that I hope viewers relate to.
